Art I Negative Shape Drawings

In this project, Art I students were given a still-life with several open shapes. When drawing the still-life, they were told only to draw the negative shapes at first. This is usually difficult for students because it reverses the way they view their surroundings, which is why some of the objects look disproportioned. After drawing the negative shapes, they were then allowed to finish the positive shapes by drawing an outline around them. Finally, they create a color pattern in the background with markers, crayons, or colored pencils.
